Summer School Holiday Fun at Summerlee Museum
An exciting programme of activities for all the family at Summerlee Museum from 1 July – 11 August.
Summerlee Museum is open every day from 10am to 4pm.
FREE ENTRY
Children should always be accompanied by an adult.
Daily Activities
- Mine tours (10am – 4pm from Monday – Friday and 12.30pm – 4pm on Saturday & Sunday)
- Old fashioned sweetie shop
- Outdoor games
- Play area
- Exhibitions
- Cafe and picnic benches
Look out for our vintage ice cream van on event days.
Our immersive space will be available most days too – check out the times when you arrive.

Den Building
Mondays 6, 13, 20 & 27 July
10.30am – 12.30pm
Build your own den in the Summerlee Woods. Summerlee Museum staff will be on hand with tips and tricks for building the best den. Once your den is built there will be games and a chance to relax in your den. Why not bring a picnic or a book to read?
All equipment is supplied. One ticket provides one den building kit for your group to use. Groups must have at least one adult present at all times.
Please wear clothing suitable for outdoor activity and uneven ground. Be prepared for wet weather – only high winds will prevent this activity from taking place.
£12 per group
Recommended for ages 5 years+ with adult help.

Toys Through Time
Tuesdays 7 & 21 July
10.30am – 3.30pm
Play with toys from long ago. A selection of old toys suitable for outdoors or indoors when it rains.

A chance to meet and handle a variety of different creatures and insects while you learn about their habits and features.

We have a huge pile of laundry to do at Summerlee Museum and we need your help! Find out how the laundry got done a century ago and help us wash our clothes the old-fashioned way with lots of bubbles and fun.

Nature at Summerlee
Tuesdays 14 & 28 July

Explore the natural world at Summerlee Museum with free nature activities including pond diving, scavenger hunts, underwater cameras and more.

Silly Science
Wednesdays 15 & 22 July
10.30am, 11.30am, 1pm & 2pm
Join the Silly Science crew for a messy bout of explosive science activities.
Activities include:
- Silly slime spectacular – make and keep your own slimy creations!
- Learning about polymers and how they work in a fun and creative way!
Sessions last 30 minutes and are suitable for children (and adults) aged 4 years+.
This is a MESSY activity so don’t wear your fancy clothes.
Please arrive 5 minutes before your time slot. Latecomers may not be admitted and no refunds are given in this event.

Stained Glass Windows
Thursdays 16 & 30 July
10.30am, 12pm & 2pm
Churches and other buildings often use stained glass windows to tell stories about a place or significant people. Make your own coloured window to display at home using simple craft materials. What story will you tell?
Use one of our templates or design your own.

Fair Monday

Bobbin Tanks
Thursday 23 July
10.30am – 3.30pm
During the second world war toys were in short supply and many children had to make do with toys made by hand using leftover items. One of the most popular toys was the Bobbin Tank. Make your own Bobbin Tank and experience wartime playtime whilst exploring STEM concepts like friction, tension and energy conversion.
