Nature Recovers

The Conservation Volunteers and Summerlee Museum

Being outside is good for the soul, fresh air is brilliant for your mental health. Being outside, in the woods with likeminded people and doing something I enjoyed was fantastic for my health and wellbeing. (TCV activity participant.)

If you have seen the wildflower meadow being scythed or taken part in some Citizen Science at Summerlee then you know about The Conservation Volunteers work here at Summerlee.

The 23 acres of land that forms the museum was once agricultural and then heavily industrialised and the remains of this industry can be seen in Scheduled Monunments: the Monkland canal, Summerlee Ironworks and the exhibition hall (Hydrocon Crane Factory).

If you walk around the museum you will see that nature has recovered and you can enjoy a rich array of wildlife, song birds and waterfowl, bats, foxes, rabbits, deer, newts, frogs and we even have seen evidence of otters commuting through.

If life is getting too hectic for you, why not take a walk on our wild side.

I always enjoy walking around the natural areas of Summerlee, it is very calming. It is a little hidden paradise in Coatbridge.’ (Visitor Survey response, November 2024).
