The Maestro frae Motherwell
12 Jun 2026
Did you know that one of Scotland’s most celebrated musical figures hailed from North Lanarkshire? Born in Motherwell, Sir Alexander Gibson – often dubbed as “the maestro frae Motherwell” – remains a towering presence in Scotland’s cultural history an artist whose influence continues to resonate today.
Gibson made history as the first Scot to serve as Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Scottish National Orchestra (Now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra), a role he held for an impressive 25 years. During this time, he elevated the orchestra’s reputation on an international stage, bringing Scottish music-making to audiences far beyond its borders.
In 1962, driven by a bold and inclusive vision, he founded Scottish Opera. His ambition was simple yet transformative: to ensure opera was not an exclusive art form, but one that could be enjoyed by communities across the country. His leadership helped to cultivate a rich and accessible cultural landscape, one that Scotland continues to benefit from today.
A proud alumnus of Dalziel High School and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Gibson’s legacy is embedded in the next generation of performers. The Alexander Gibson Opera School stands as a testament to his enduring commitment to nurturing talent and excellence in the arts.
Sir Alexander’s passion, vision and unwavering dedication didn’t just shape a career, they transformed Scotland’s musical identity. His achievements remain a source of pride for Motherwell and the wider North Lanarkshire community.
Marking 100 Years: A Special Celebration
To celebrate what would have been Sir Alexander Gibson’s centenary, Arts Development is delighted to welcome Scottish Opera’s much-loved Pop-Up Opera tour to New Stevenston Community Centre on Thursday 25 October at 7pm.
Audiences can enjoy a vibrant double bill of two 30-minute operas: “A Little Bit of Rigoletto” and “A Little Bit of The Elixir of Love.” Carefully paired to highlight the contrasting shades of love, the performance journeys from the dark, dramatic underworld of tragedy to the bright, joyful charm of romantic comedy in the Italian countryside.
Whether you’re a long-time opera enthusiast or completely new to the art form, this accessible and engaging evening offers the perfect introduction.
As part of the event, visitors will also have the opportunity to see a newly installed photograph and commemorative plaque honouring Sir Alexander Gibson – bringing his story firmly into the heart of the community he once called home.
