Summer Reading Challenge

Open a Book, Begin an Adventure
Our Summer Reading Challenge 2026 begins on Saturday 13 June and runs throughout the summer holidays until Saturday 22 August. This should give kids plenty of opportunity to enjoy a summer reading and have fun along the adventure.
Sign up for the challenge by Friday 3 July and your child will be entered into a prize draw to win one of our great prizes which includes, cinema tickets, M&Ds vouchers, Innoflate vouchers and Time Capsule vouchers.
How it Works
With 2026 being the National Year of Reading, our focus for the challenge is to have it all about enjoying reading.
When a child signs up for the challenge in their local library, they will receive their progress card to keep track of how they are doing.
The aim is to read 6 books over the course of the summer. Stickers and prizes will be given out after every second book. Your child will be able to complete the challenge in as little as 3 visits to their local library during the summer months.
The Prizes
As well as the stickers for keeping track of progress, children work towards receiving 3 prizes as they read more books.
- A Magnetic Bookmark
- A Pencil Topper
- A Torch Keyring
A great set of treats, all for enjoying good books throughout the holidays.
Medals and Certificates
No Summer Reading Challenge is complete without the reward of a medal and certificate at the end for completing the challenge and this year is no different.
Once the challenge has finished, our libraries will get in touch with all of our great readers that finish the challenge with details on how they can collect their medal and certificate.
Summer Reading Bonus Challenge 2026
For our most avid little readers, we also have a Summer Reading Bonus Challenge for anyone who completes the main challenge with plenty of time to spare.
The bonus challenge works in the same way as the main challenge with a little added extra. Your little ones can collect stickers for every 2 books they read but using the guide below:
- Read a Book by Torchlight
- Read a Book Set in Scotland
- Read a Book Outside
- Read a Book About a Real Person
- Read a Book Out Loud to a Family Member
- Read a Book with a Mythical Creature in it
It’s a fun challenge, aimed at making reading even more fun. We won’t be asking for photographic evidence, we trust our little readers.
Prize Draws
As well as prize draw for signing up by Friday 3 July, we will also have further prize draws at the end of the summer for all of the children that complete the Summer Reading Challenge and the Summer Reading Bonus Challenge.
These prize draws will be drawn at the end of summer and the lucky winners will be the proud owners of Kindle Fires.
